The Awe Spring Season: Connect with the Wonders of Spring

Spring is a season of transition.

Transition seasons offer us an opportunity to deeply connect with nature more easily. Where summer and winter feel static, spring literally changes before our eyes exploding with a lust for life. Fruit-bearing trees flower and blossom. Daffodils and snowdrops burst out of the ground. Ponds resonate with the croaking of frogs. The dawn chorus peaks with the forgotten songs of returning birds. And if we're lucky we may even feel a sunbeam on our vitamin D deprived faces. Modest winter scenes in parks come alive with their spring finery.

For me, transition seasons are richest with awe. We don't have to try too hard to notice new things. When the world is in flux we pay attention. Like bees to flowers, moderns humans salivate at the novel. When the world is static we ignore her. Instead we hunt for the next delicious trove of dopamine. Just one more tap, scroll or swipe. Our natural surroundings, dormant for the last few months, now reawaken! During spring, something fresh will attract our senses during a short walk in nature. There is enough novelty to make us forget social media, even for only 5 minutes.

Spring's sword is double edged. That which is novel, is not novel for long.

Blossom last only a couple weeks before wind and rain offer the tree a blank canvas. Her handsome pink magnificence laying scattered on the ground. Frog spawn lasts only a little longer before the tadpoles emerge. Their own croaks serenading the pond. And the ducklings soon replace their juvenile cuteness with familiar adult jadedness. Spring moves fast. Blink and you'll miss it.

Carving out the time to appreciate the season is necessary for both our busy lives and busy minds.
